It's Apple sauce time!
I wanted to go pick apples this year, but doesn't look like we'll be making it down to the orchards again. So instead I watched for prices to go down on apples in the markets. We got a great deal on Washington grown apples at 49. cents a pound. I bought almost 20 pounds of apples for around $12.00. That's a deal!
We brought them home, washed them and prepared
our list of things to do with the apples.
I knew we would spend a whole morning and
afternoon cooking up and canning the apple sauce.
Then I set up the water bath canner and started the boil, as Freckles cut and cored the apples. We used our apple peeler thingy ma~bob to do the work. It saves us time and works perfectly for the task at hand. And freckles will admit, it is fun!
We made 4 jars of pink cinnamon apple sauce and 4 jars of regular golden apple sauce both with a hint of chunky goodness in each. It was well worth the 4 hours spent making them. I just may have to go back and get more apples for that price before it's too late...
The more apple sauce the merrier!
I am pretty proud of our little jars of goodies we made over the Summer and Fall thus far. We gave a lot of jam and apricots away over the Summer... yet, we are still left with some strawberry, plum, cherry, rose, and apricot jams as well as the canned apricots and now our yummy apple sauce!
Thank God for His bounty!
Mica, What a beautiful post! I have always wanted to know how to can. I think it such a wonderful memory for children to have. Your blog page is delightful with it's quilt sidebars, your header so charming with the faces of your children. Always so much fun to hear from you! Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteIsn't nice to see all those cans sitting in a row. You will have to try making roasted apple or pear sauce one day xoxo Clarice
ReplyDeleteI love home-made applesauce. Your kitchen and it's splashes of red I adore. The little toy stove (I think)
ReplyDeleteis just darling. I want one!
Mmm, homemade applesauce is such a wonderful treat :) I'm hoping to can pumpkin this year. I always long for it throughout the year when it's not available fresh so I thought if I can some plain I will have it for cookies and then I thought that I'd do some with all of the pie spices in it so that we could have pumpkin pie in May if we shall so desire *grin*. Hope you are all having a lovely weekend! Hugs.

You are giving me some inspiration to can applesauce! I just made a batch in the crockpot for a family dinner tonight and it was soooo good--I need some of this for the winter.
