Good Memories

Our time in Olympia with my parents were coming to a close. We had a special treat the day before leaving...My Aunt and Uncle came for a quick visit and had a nice BBQ with us. It was so good seeing them...It's been at least five years since we have seen them...a bit before we left for Seminary. I have fond memories of my Uncle Herb. As a little girl, he always made me feel special...He paid attention and has a fun sense of humor. Though we didn't live close...Every time I would see him, it was like we never parted. He gives great hugs too. My Aunt came into his life a little later...She was perfect for him...She adopted me in as if she knew me her whole life. And I in turn adore her. I love how they never forget our birthdays, how they wrote us updates on their adventures through the years and their genuine hearts. But what I observed on this visit was the tenderness they gave to my daughter. I loved seeing my Uncle engage with her... She is a quiet spirit, who comes off very shy...But all it took was for him to sit there and just talk to her, she warmed up and surely stole his heart.

It was pure endearment.
The visit was short but sweet and brought me joy. Though it was short, the memory of that time will forever be in our hearts. Just as this whole week with my parents will. I will cherish our time, every morning sitting at the table , eating waffles and fruit, talking, watching the deer pass through the yard each afternoon and evening, the little bit of sight seeing and antique shopping.

My Mama taking us girls out to a special lunch and shopping in the junk shops. We had fun digging for treasures...Happily we found a few items that would fit in our luggage. She bought me a beautiful embroidered pillowcase with bluebirds on it....It will have the honor of adorning our bed in the guest room....And every time I see it I will think of the fun we had looking for our goodies.

Before leaving my parents sat down with us and let us take whatever old family photos I wanted. I was in complete awe. So many of the pictures I have never seen...Pictures of my Great Grandparents and Grandparents on each side of the family, my dad's siblings, my dad as a young boy, pictures of Great Aunts and Uncles...I adore them, I will treasure them. Pictures to me, mean something, it's a part of me, of where I came from, it's pictures of my people. I am a very visual person, so pictures and events are a huge thing in my soul. Pictures bring things to life for me along with the stories behind them. It is a true fascination. I am proud of where I came from, even though a lot of my life was moving around a lot, dysfunctional and filled with uncertainty and insecurity. I praise God for bringing me out of all that, to forgive, to move on and have hope. I look at things now as a huge learning experience, some of it not so pretty. But most of it quite beautiful. The pictures are one of the best gifts I have ever received. My Mama went through her cedar chest and let me take a bunch of embroidered pieces that were done many years ago by her great aunties. It was a privilege to take what I believe are sweet treasures. I will be using them in my home happily. Our time finally came to an end. We leave with good memories, hugs and tears welled up in our eyes....For I don't know when I will see my parents again. It was a huge blessing to have the opportunity to visit if only it was for one week.

But, it was time to say our goodbyes.
My parents dropped us off so that Freckles and I would have a week with my boy. Six months have passed since he moved back to Washington leaving our little nest.
It was pure joy to see him, Mr. Independent, driving his own wheels
and looking sharp, ready for work. It was a proud Mama moment.
More on that later....

Downtown Olympia

After seeing the Capitol building my parents/Freckle's Grandparents...took us to downtown Olympia for the fair and some antiquing. I am more of a visual person so pictures for me, mean a lot. I am not fond of graffiti all over towns, but this kind of artsy graffiti is fine. I love how this kind of backdrop in  pictures adds lot's of color and quirkiness. Moving on....

In all honesty...I don't like carnivals very much. The one reason is they are so expensive. A family can barely afford the ticket prices for their mediocre rides. You spend $20 bucks for 30 tickets, each ride is around 8-10 tickets. No way...I won't pay. The games are just as bad.... you hardly win and if you do win you get a cheap toy. Yikes. The food and drinks...HELLO. $3.50 for a little lemonade. I don't think so. What happened to the good ole days where carnivals were good cheap fun for a family. This isn't Disneyland folks. I have one last thing to bash on this carnival...The "craft booths" were filled with made in China junk. We were all very disappointed. I don't like being negative, but for goodness sake, it was all ridiculous. So we just walked through and took pictures.
The coolest thing was there were old school rides with fun vintage style.

After all that we stopped in a little cafe for some lemonade then did a little
browsing around a few shops. That was better than the carnival for sure.

We stopped in this quirky, funky vintage shop. It was fun...
a little pricey for our taste...but fun nonetheless. It was really fun shopping with my Mama C....She loves all that old vintage stuff. She makes the coolest purses too.
She enjoys buying embellishments for her art work. Ha....Just like me.

Freckles is also a great partner in crime when it comes to vintage shopping. Shes got style and great taste I must add. We had fun rifling through the shops together....Even my dad enjoyed himself.

The best part of the day was when they all got goofy together.
Oh the giggles we had taking this picture.
I am just so thrilled that my parents can just be plain goof balls,
and be so relaxed about it. Freckles was not embarrassed at all...
It actually brought her out of her shell a bit. That is a good thing.
I just know this visit with her grandparents will be forever memorable to her.
We had so much fun.

State Capitol Building in Olympa, Washingtoni

Both Freckles and I were born in Washington State. I consider Washington my home and miss living there. Despite the massive rain, it is a beautiful state. The years we spent there, we never visited the State Capitol before. So, this was a real treat for us.

I have one word for the State Capitol...
Grand.

It was gorgeous inside and out...The high ceilings, ornate details, beautifully constructed architecture, marble and gold...Just lovely. As we walked through the halls and up the stairs I imagined the history it carries, and the stories it would tell. I couldn't get enough of the grandeur.
The smallest details were there. Just delightful.

I was pleasantly surprised that it was as beautiful as it was.
I felt like I was in Europe walking through the oldest buildings. It was simply beautiful.

After walking through every room we could we picked up a couple souvenirs
and had a sweet picnic under a whimsical tree together. It was a great day.

After lunch we walked through this Vietnam Veteran Memorial. It was very hard for my dad to go through as he looked at the names written on the walls. These were names of brave heroes that served,
and died... They were names of people he probably knew from his hometown. My dad is one hero that came home. He does not say much of this war at all. He carries those stories in his mind everyday. It touched me greatly as he looked at the names written the years he served. I am sure he was silently crying inside. I could only be silent and thankful for these men who served and for my dad.

This is a memory I will treasure.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

The next day of our trip we went on a little nature hike in Nisqually. A lovely refuge for all kinds of wildlife. We were there on a very warm day...there was barely any animals visible. Yet we did see a toad, some yellow birds, ducks, some insects and an eagle.
We also forgot water. It was a nice, easy hike though.
Even though we didn't see much, it was a lovely time
spent together in God's beauty.
