Frolicking Freckles Summertime Vintage Style Series~ 1940's~

Well, we are finally getting settled into our new home and our normal routines after the long five months we were without our own home. Due to staying with others, we never quite felt we could continue on our normal routine path since there was so much going on and things I will not discuss here. Anyways due to stress and other things beyond our control, Freckles missed quite a bit of school.   She was reading and writing regularly, but the normal stuff wasn't getting done. Thankfully she is home schooled and we have the opportunity to catch up this Summer. That is just what we are going to do. So, back to school..."Summer School" that is.... to catch up. And, yes she will still have some fun this Summer, I wouldn't deprive her of that. We will be going on some field trips as we need to venture out a bit and learn about our new area...The Bay area. And, she will be going on her first Summer Camp trip. I decided since I am a visual,  hands on, unit study kind of Mama who loves history too...And I have a visual, hands on, unit study kind of daughter who also loves history...That I would pull together a unit type study on a couple of our favorite eras. The 1930's~1940's.

Freckles came out the other day in a blue shirt and red banana on her head making this gesture with her arms, declaring "We Can Do It". I just about died laughing and grabbed the camera. This is just what inspired this Summertime Vintage Style Series. So...Follow along if you would like. We will start off a little backwards with the 1940's, since Freckles inspired this whole thing...And well, Independence Day is just around the corner, so I'm feeling a bit patriotic. Later we will move into the 1930's.This series of the 1940's will include crafting, cooking, baking, sewing
and a resource list to help you dive into the era a bit more.
Here's a little crafty photo booth idea for you:
Make a Rosie Riveter poster~
I took a picture of Freckles just like the pose of the Rosie Riveter poster. Then I took it into Pic Monkey and colored around it and added the text. If your daring and know how to do this in Pic Monkey or Photoshop, then by all means have fun and be creative. Okay some of us may not be savvy with the computer....so here's what you can do instead: Dress up in a blue or white button up shirt, roll up the sleeves, add a bandanna, make a photo booth back drop on a wall or use a big sheet...( yellow would be nice, but not necessary.) Now make a big speech bubble from blue construction paper and painting "We Can Do It" with white acrylic paint. Attach this to the wall or a big sheet. Take a picture, crop it and have it printed...You can then use it for a scrapbook about the 1940's or a memory album. Or... You could always have your child draw
a poster with colored crayons, markers or colored pencils.

Note* This is not a project that I intend to encourage feminism. I believe in the 1940's there were women who had to work because their husbands had to go to war and women who wanted to support the war effort. They didn't have much of a choice back then. Keeping food on the table and caring for families was hard. I am also not against the woman who chooses or has to work in this day and age.
This is not about my personal political beliefs.
Rosie The Riveter was an American Icon and surely
could be used as a lesson in our history.

Eat Watermelon
****
A favorite Summertime pastime is eating watermelon. We bought this lovely yellow watermelon from Sprouts and thought we would cut it up, while Freckles enjoyed some reading time at the kitchen table. Freckles is almost 13 years old...And still enjoys the American Girl series. We highly recommend the Molly American Girl book series, which will give you glimpses into the time of 1944.

Freckles also enjoys the book called Welcome to Molly's World, which is filled with pictures and information that will benefit any 1940's study as well as World War II. You can also find Molly's cookbook for cooking projects on Ebay or Amazon.

She also likes watching The American Girl Molly movie.
We love the visuals of how it would have been back then.

Hope this will help kick start some Summertime fun.
Keep your eye out for the next installment to this series.
 See you later.

This & That

I spent the last couple days preparing for this school year...So glad to be done with that part. Now, we're ready to go starting after this next weekend. Thanks again for all your prayers regarding my illness. Well, I am still sick with bronchitus and getting over the flu...No fun...no fun at all. It has really worn me out....Yet, I am trying my hardest to stay on track with my everyday duties. I have really been enjoying listening to a bunch of old records I found thrifting a while back. Each record cost 99 cents. I love them....Music from the 30's & 40's...like Artie Shaw, Leroy Anderson, Jo Stafford and others.
There's nothing like the sound of an old record playing on a phonograph.
In other news...Freckles spent a lovely long weekend a couple weeks back with her friend, celebrating her birthday. They went to The American Girl store in L.A, had a sleep over with a few girls one night, watched movies, had many giggles and sang songs all weekend long.
They also hung out at the mall and had another sleepover with their friend Cozi
( The young actress from the movie, Dolphin Tale.)
If you haven't seen the movie...see it...What a sweet story inspired
by the true story about a dolphin named Winter.
It's a Great, wholesome family film.
It was a great way to end the Summer.
Now to get ready for school next week.
Bring on the 7th grade.

Literary Tea Time...2011

Today was the day....Our literary Tea Group has officially come together for the year. There were some changes however.... Our hostess last year is busy with college classes and decided she would not be able to continue the group. As many of you know, who have followed my blog for a time... Freckles and I have grown to love the group so much that I asked our friend if she wouldn't mind if we took it over. She was delighted to pass it on to us. I am so happy to have the opportunity to bless young maidens with this sweet tradition. A group of young ladies and their mothers coming together once a month to enjoy a traditional tea, food, fellowship, prayer and reading from sound Christian literature. I now consider this my ministry in the making to encourage young ladies as the Bible instructs. Our afternoon started with reading a few excerpts from The Valley of Vision, a collection of prayers & devotions.(Thanks Marilee). We then started reading from Little Threads by Elizabeth Prentiss written in 1863. It is a story about obedience. We read about the contrasting lives of Tangle Thread and Golden Thread, one the cause of much grief for her godly mother, and the other the only bright spot in her poor mother's world. Yet, we only got half way through the book. We will look forward to next months tea to finish the rest of the story.

I pray our time together this year will be fruitful and glorify God. I pray this time will strengthen our bond as mothers, daughters and sisters in Christ, that we would grow in our faith together.

Of course there was food. The table was set for our young maidens to enjoy the fruits of their labors, since everyone contributed something wonderful to share.

There was plenty of tea...
We must have had about 5 pots full.YUM!

It was thoroughly a wonderful time spent together. I was blessed by each and every one of these young ladies...and now, looking forward to next month when ...Lord willing we will come together again.
Thank you for stopping by....Have a blessed weekend!

A Funny Float, A Fruitful Pitcher & A Springtime Music Box....

My daughter drew this picture to enter in The American Girl magazine for their float contest. She came up with a funny colorful float...A rainbow colored owl with her pulling the float along in a parade the sky is filled with balloons and confetti.Too cute for words. She hopes they will like it and publish it in the next magazine. I think it is quite a whimsical Festive piece. By the way...The owlets we watch from the live cams are now hatching from their eggs...
It is so fun to see.

This was a find from Thrifting...It had a little chip, but I loved it anyway. The fruit is colorful and I adore the crazing in the piece.... For now it sits in my kitchen on a shelf. It was only $1.00!!!
I am open for ideas on what to do with it. I thought perhaps a vase for flowers.

This cute find made me smile. It is simple, sweet and cheery on a Winter day.
It gets me in the mood for Spring!!! I found this when we were in Santa Maria this Summer for .75 cents.
It plays music even.
Love Blooms where it is planted.
Have a wonderful day!!!

Rainy Day Blues....

This morning we woke up to stormy Fall weather....
We had rain, thunder and lightning all day into the evening.
It was the perfect sort of weather to enjoy homemade chicken noodle soup.
 I used a recipe that
 Rosina
 shared over on her blog....
 It was yummy!
The kids finished up their school this afternoon...
While Freckles went off to play for the day ....

Then I got out the rainy day bag of crafts.
I knew it would soon come in handy.

Freckles started a little Nature scrapbook...
So cute, made by American Girl.
Michael's Crafts has a whole American Girl craft line in their store.
I had picked up a few crafts a while back just for days like this.

Then we pulled out this sweet craft...
We stitched the remainder of the afternoon away.
This craft is perfect for a beginning hand sewer.
All the holes are pre poked out for you....

It was also a lesson in patience. Freckles did a nice job...
Yet, still has to finish her raccoon up later. Mama just sews a little bit faster...
So she spent the rest of the rainy daylight playing with the raccoon
I finished and read up in her bedroom.

Oh did you notice her bed???
I painted it last week while it was really hot outside.
This was on my to do list for Fall projects. Freckles chose a Robin's egg blue paint...
Which will turn into more of a girly nature room.
 She loves it!

I think the little raccoon likes it too! I also finished her
second pair of vintage sheets Jammie pants the other day...
 Everything is coordinating!

It might be a blue rainy day...
But surely Freckles isn't too blue about it...
She is having a ball jumping on her bed!

Okay, okay...
The sun is going down soon and Freckles decided to read a bit more...
As she listens to the rain hitting her window.

It's going to be a blustery night ahead!
