Summer Life

Summer life has been quiet. Not too busy since we came home from our vacation. Mr. Darling has been back working on sermons for church. Freckles and I hang out...Slowly I have been putting things away from our move in February. I know it's been a while but I just kinda lost momentum. It's coming together and filling empty walls that need love on it. Freckles has already gone to a few functions with friends, swimming and a sleep over. She's been reading and working on her journal and some writing. The fun part of Summer is coming up this next week as she is going to her first Summer Camp up at Hume Lake with her friend Bella and their youth group. A week of fun and fellowship with other Christian youth/High Schooler's.

I also got my sketch journal out and decided to sketch and paint. Something I haven't done in a long time. I also decided to take an online class from Yes and Amen blog. I just wanted to try some new things out and gather up inspiration. It should be quite fun!

With all my jamming/canning...I have had jam on the brain...
So I drew up this delightful jar of strawberry jam...
Perhaps after taking Junelle's class, I will sketch and paint more goodies.

If your interested you can go to her blog and purchase her workshop. Just look up Yes and Amen Blog. It starts July 10th, 2015. It is 3 full weeks of  art and food instruction. So fun!!!

Tasha Tudor Day 2010

It is said... Better late than never.
My dear bloggy friend Clarice over at
 Storybook Woods
Celebrated Tasha Tudor Day August 28th... In Tasha's memory I too am celebrating a wee bit late. I have been a Tasha Tudor fan for many years now, her timeless illustrations and her simple life on a farm. She is lovingly adored and greatly missed. We decided since Tasha herself enjoyed her tea and goodies..... We would have a special tea party in her honor.

Much of her life consisted of gardening...
Which she had always surrounded herself with beautiful flowers.
We decided to make homemade Rose Jam and Cream Scones for the tea party.
 Yummmy!
Below is the recipe I used for the Rose Jam.

Ingredients

8 ounces fresh rose petals, white base trimmed off

2 cups white sugar

3 cups water

lemon juice

1 (1.75 ounce) package powdered fruit pectin

Directions

1.Toss the rose petals and sugar together in a bowl until evenly coated.
Cover, and let stand at room temperature overnight.
2.The following day, bring the water to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the rose petals and all of the sugar, and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer 20 minutes. Increase the heat to medium-high, and return the mixture to a boil that cannot be stirred down. Stir in the pectin, and boil for 1 minute. Pour the jam into 4 sterilized half-pint jars. Seal with rings and lids, and store in a cool dark place

The Cream Scones turned out delightful, perfect with a dab of butter and topped with the Rose Jam...
it was perfect together. Here is the recipe for the scones too!

Cream Scone Recipe:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup  granulated white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and place the rack in the middle of the oven.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into small pieces and blend into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or two knives. The mixture should look like coarse crumbs. In a small measuring cup combine the whipping cream, beaten egg and vanilla. Add this mixture to the flour mixture. Stir just until combined. Do not over mix.

Knead dough gently on a lightly floured surface. Roll or pat the dough into a circle that is about 7 inches (18 cm) round. Then, using a 2 1/2 inch (6.5 cm) round cookie cutter, cut the dough into rounds. Place the rounds on the prepared cookie sheet, spacing a few inches apart. Brush the tops of the scones with a little cream. This helps to brown the tops of the scones during baking.

Bake for about 15 - 18 minutes or until nicely browned and a toothpick inserted into the center of a scone comes out clean. Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Makes about 10 - 2 1/2 inch  round scones.

I hope you enjoyed having tea with Tasha and me.
Happy Tasha Tudor Day!
Late!!!

My Little Red Hen

When I was about the ages of 8-10 years old we moved to a little town where there were little farms & horse property etc. It was the best time in my childhood since that was the time I had my own farm pets to care for. The first thing we got were chickens...well, eggs actually. I had the opportunity to watch the chicks hatch from their little eggs... all except one could not get out by itself. So I took it upon myself to help it out by taking some of the shell off, enough to give the chick a chance. She made it out! After a time, the other chickens started to attack her. To our surprise the little hen I helped out was a runt with a crooked neck. ( The others didn't like her because she was little and different) I will never forget when I went out one morning to feed them...the others were attacking her, I opened the gate and she ran into my arms. I took her under my wing from then on. My dad built a little cage home all her own where she would be safe and sound, without anyone picking on her. She was a funny little thing, who followed me like a chick would follow her Mama. She would come by her name ( DUSTY), she would sleep in my room, eat human food, ride on my bike handle bars and she even rode our horse. She was a delight!

Every morning I would let her out to run the yard while I fed and watered the dogs, the cats, the rabbits, the guinea pig, the chickens, and horses before going off to school. Every day she would be waiting for me when I got home. About two years went by, she had never laid an egg until one day I stuck my head in her nesting box, there she sat looking at me, clucking as if she was trying to talk to me. She lifted up her little bum and there it came... she popped out one little egg right in front of me. I was amazed, I watched it harden and ran to tell my Mother what Dusty had showed me. That was the one and only egg she ever laid. One morning I went out to feed and water everybody as I did every morning. Dusty was picking in the grass. It was my birthday that day. I was so excited and in a rush I went off to school. I came home that day to the most horrific sight a child would encounter. I stood in my yard filled with little red feathers.. My heart sank... Where was Dusty? O my! I screamed and cried out, Dusty! It was my Dusty, the feathers were the only thing left from her. I had forgotten that morning to put her back in her house. Our dogs had killed her that day and I wasn't there to save her. It was the worst ( birthday ) day of my life. It took a long time to get over that sweet hen. I think about her often... She will be remembered always. Several months ago I bought the little painting above by Artist, Julie Haymaker Thompson of a little girl feeding her hens...though they are not red hens, it reminded me of my childhood hen. Someday I hope to have hens again. At least  for my children to experience the joy of raising them.. I would call one Dusty.

Time For Art History

For our Artist/Art lessons this month, we are studying
Giuseppe Arcimboldo
an Italian Artist from 1530-1593.
He is well known for Portraits of heads made up
of a variety of objects, from fruit and
leaves to flowers and vegetables.
Arcimboldo's work falls in the period known as Mannerism.
To view his complete works and biography click on the picture above.

Miss freckles water colored a drawing of
Vortumnus (Vertumno)
AKA, Emperor Rudolf II.

The colors turned out wonderfully!
This is a great project for the Autumn Season.

Senecio....

Senecio
(pronounced /sɨˈniːʃi.oʊ/)[1] is a genus of the daisy family. The flower heads are normally rayed, completely yellow, and the heads are borne in branched clusters.
***************
Check out this sweet crewel embroidered piece I found while junking !!!
The colors are vivid as the design is sweet.
I love the posies and the little blue bird flying overhead.
The cheery piece is wrapped around a wooden frame, which I hung in my little studio.

I also picked up this colorful vintage art smock for $3.00.
It's perfect for my little Freckles
The art smock was made with bright flowery vintage fabric and has huge pockets to carry around spare art brushes or pencils and completely covers her whole front so as not to get her pretty clothes dirty.

It also ties in the back for an easy on & off.
Freckles absolutely loved it!
She even created a wonderful masterpiece
to add to the rest of her " Flower Gallery",
which we will share as soon as she finishes a few more pieces.

Senecio
By Paul Klee ( 1879-1940)

Many of Paul Klees pictures were made up of shapes
and patterns that had hidden meaning.
This portrait is called Senecio, which means a group of plants.
The title is a clue to help us see that Klee has
painted this face to look like the head of a flower.
*************

Here is Freckles version of "Senecio".

SMELL THE FLOWERS!!!
